The Credit Union Difference

Cigar BoxTBA Credit Union began with a few spare dollars, a cigar box and a basic trust in people. It was 1955. Dwight Eisenhower was in the White House. Elvis had not yet had his first hit. And a few members of the Traverse City school system were making a little history of their own. Seeing a need to help educators and school staff with their finances, the small group pooled the $50 needed for a credit union charter. On Thanksgiving Day, 1955, the Traverse City School Employees Credit Union was chartered.

In those early days, funds were kept in a cigar box. Those needing a loan could take what they needed and leave an I.O.U. to be covered the next payday. It was a level of shared trust that continues today with TBACU members.

Like our area, TBACU has grown considerably and now provides a wide range of services to over 13,000 members. Now chartered as a community credit union, TBACU offers membership to anyone within a five-county area, including Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties. We have, however, never strayed far from our roots. We are committed to our members. Their needs. Their dreams. Their financial futures. It’s why we got started. It’s why we continue.

Mission and Service Statement

Our Mission

TBA Credit Union is committed to serving the community by building trusted relationships, providing customized financial products, advocating financial literacy and encouraging volunteerism.

Our Service Standards

YOU will receive an immediate and friendly greeting.
YOU will be serviced with a smile.
YOU will be addressed by name.
YOU will be given our full attention.
YOU will receive recommendations to improve your financial well-being.
YOU will be treated with courtesy and respect.
YOU will be thanked for your business.

What’s the Difference?

Many wonder, “What IS the difference between credit unions and other financial institutions?” The answer is simple: Credit unions exist to help people, not to make a profit. That difference resulted in TBA Credit Union being established as a financial cooperative rather than a bank. At a cooperative, you are a member/owner, not a number/customer.

Close to 186 million people are members of credit unions in 97 countries. As financial cooperatives that stand for social responsibility and economic viability, credit unions address the common goals of their members.

  • Voluntary and open membership
  • Democratic member control
  • Member economic participation
  • Autonomy and independence
  • Education, training, and information
  • Cooperation among cooperatives
  • Concern for community

As financial cooperatives, credit unions are much more than money lenders and holders. We stand for the power of people helping people. Credit unions are prime examples of how the cooperative spirit transforms individuals and advances communities, the first steps toward building a better world.

“I am truly excited for this (Wills and Trusts) seminar. Thank you for offering it! :)”

“(Rhonda) I just wanted to say Thank You again. I really appreciate all your hard work during the process on the house. It really made it seem simple on my end. I will certainly recommend you and TBA to anyone I know.”

“I would like to let you folks know that it has been a real pleasure working with John Brostrom at TBA credit union. He is very knowledgeable and pleasant to work with as he was able to go above and beyond and answer all my questions that I had. He made me feel very welcome at TBA and that is always a nice thing. I just wanted to say that it is hard to find a good employee and I think that you definitely have one at TBA. My husband and I will continue to be customers at TBA because of John Brostrom and we will recommend our family, friends or anyone who needs a loan or would like to open up a bank account to go to TBA.”

“I had to call Linda Lewis to work on an issue I was having with my auto loan payments. She was very friendly and helpful in answering all my questions and explaining what happened to my account. Her demeanor on the phone was very friendly and professional. I just wanted to give kudos to Linda.”

“Thank you for being my credit union. You are the best.”

“It has been a pleasure working with you so far, you have been very instrumental in helping me turn my career around. I can’t thank you enough for the faith you have put in me, I was still reeling from my financial disaster when I walked through your door for the first time. Will definitely recommend TBA to everyone I know that needs financing.”

“I worked with Nina from your loan office; she did an exceptional job working with me. I was away on vacation in Missouri and trying to purchase a motorcycle in Kalamazoo, so there were a lot of details and difficulties to overcome. She was very helpful in getting everything put together and ready so we were able to pick it up on our way back. Just wanted to say thanks and let you know Nina was great to work with.”

“You have such kind, friendly, and caring people at ALL of your branches.”

“Thank you so much for taking care of me during my dehydration episode. I had just donated blood. I appreciate all your caring efforts. The call I received after I got home was AWESOME! Thank you all!”

“You are treated like a real person, not just a number or a sales opportunity.”

“Wanted to let you know that Mae from the Eighth Street office, is exceptional at her job over there. Definitely a candidate for promotion from within. She is very good at what she does.”

“You have an AMAZING Team.  I’ve traveled the world, working with banks far and wide and have never had an experience like the one I had with TBA.  The fanfare and accolades I’ve heard over the years doesn’t come close to the experience I had with your Team.”

“I am proud to have been the first TCAPS Student Run Credit Union.  Thank you for taking the suggestions and bringing them to life; coin games and sticker reminders.  I have enjoyed watching the changes and growth of the program over the past few years.  What TBA Credit Union offers to students is a chance to make a positive difference in the life of their peers.  All students involved at Long Lake Elementary SRCU were encouraged to think about their future and were exposed to a greater understanding of money and the importance of saving!”

“I have had a membership with you since 1979 and value your services and personnel!”

“Nina was awesome at helping me get a car loan! She met me early before branch hours and had everything prepared!  I will only use TBA Credit Union from now on!”

“Kids’ Day was a hit for my family! I can’t wait for the next event. The staff was having so much fun, maybe I should consider a career switch! It’s evident that TBACU is dedicated to growing a strong community.  Thank you!”

“Karen, Peg and Robin…thank you for your support and for taking the time to drop what you were doing to personally attend to my business needs.”

“Thank you, Cindy, for all you did today at Silver Lake’s Grand Opening.  The Student Run Credit Union will be a wonderful experience for the students!”

“I am glad I switched to TBA Credit Union.  The staff is so friendly and helpful!”

“Every time I need to visit a branch, I can look forward to happy smiles and pleasant greetings!”
